Valery Gergiev, conductor

Raskatov / Stravinski

Valery Gergiev and his Mariinsky Theatre Orchestra will top off their stay in Montreux with a doubly remarkable concert. Stravinsky's emblematic Rite of Spring, written in 1913 in Clarens for Diaghilev's Ballets Russes, is an obvious choice for a festival devoted to Russian culture. The ballet's premiere in Paris caused a riot but brought the composer fame soon afterwards. Alexander Raskatov's opera Eclipse also has ties to the lemanic area. A descendant of one of the Decembrists sentenced to death in 1825 asked the Moscow-born musician to compose an opera about the Decembrist revolt in St. Petersburg. Raskatov himself wrote the libretto, making use of a wide variety of Russian and French literary sources and historical records, including documents he found in the family archives of the project's Swiss patron. This gripping opera was first performed in June 2018 at the Mariinsky Theatre. The extracts included in this concert will be a Swiss premiere.
