Children probably dream of listening to their idol in a concert hall, their parents of encountering one of the most famous conductors of all times. The opening event of the 74th Septembre Musical is sure to delight a wide audience by bringing Henri Dès and Valery Gergiev together on stage for a concert at the Stravinski Auditorium. These two famous artists will share Peter and the Wolf, Sergei Prokofiev's beautiful symphonic fairy tale, with the children and their parents. Welcome to the Russian countryside, where each of the story's characters and animals introduces a new instrument, played by a musician of the legendary Mariinsky Theatre Orchestra. A lavish opening to this year's Russian festival programme, and which will allow Henri Dès' young fans to discover that their favourite singer is also a great storyteller.

There's no treading the Russian music scene without meeting the Mariinsky Theatre Orchestra and its emblematic conductor Valery Gergiev, who's headed this remarkable orchestra for over three decades. Gergiev champions Russian music, both in the symphony and the opera repertoire. For the opening of its first "Window" with a view on Russia, the Septembre Musical will have the honour of welcoming the St. Petersburg musical tsar. In the festival's first symphonic concert, Alexandre Kantorow, the gold medallist of the prestigious International Tchaikovsky Competition, will accompany Gergiev. The programme promises to be a thrill: Prokofiev (excerpts from the ballet Romeo and Juliet) will be in excellent company alongside Tchaikovsky (Piano concerto Nº 2 and Fourth Symphony).

Excerpts from the ballet Romeo and Juliet op. 64

Piotr Ilyitch Tchaikovsky (1840-1893)
