Beethoven / Brahms

Switzerland’s longest established orchestra begins the season with a new musical director. German conductor Michael Sanderling was recently appointed in Lucerne at the head of the symphony orchestra founded more than two hundred years ago. He starts his tenure with a visit to Brahms, who was in Zurich to attend the inauguration of the Tonhalle. His Fourth Symphony, whose autograph is to be found in a Zurich library, is on a par with Beethoven's “Emperor” Concerto. Geneva-born Louis Schwitzgebel, a brilliant pianist of international reputation, will perform this powerful and much-loved work.

Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827) - Piano concerto No. 5 in E-flat major op. 73 “Emperor”
Johannes Brahms (1833-1897) - Symphony No. 4 in E minor

The concert, with an intermission of about 20 minutes, ends around 22:15. It is recorded by Espace 2.
