PRESENTATION

Septembre Musical Montreux-Vevey 2012
66th edition

The Septembre Musical Montreux-Vevey presents great symphonic orchestras, renowned soloists and new talents and this edition is no exception to the rule! Among the festivities, I look forward to welcoming nothing less than a bouquet of orchestras: the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra London, in residence at the Auditorium Stravinski and its brilliant brass ensemble, but also the Philharmonic Orchestra of Saint-Petersburg as well as the Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin. These orchestras will respond like magic to the batons of Charles Dutoit, David Zinman, Yuri Temirkanov and Marek Janowski, all faithful to the festival.

With the orchestras, exceptional soloists will delight us in unforgettable repertoires! The great violinists Leonidas Kavakos, in a programme of Beethoven’s sonatas, Viktor Tretyakov in Prokofiev's Concerto for Violin and Orchestra No. 2 or Arabella Steinbacher –it is her first participation to the festival– for Mozart’s Violin Concerto N° 5. There will also be a string of major pianists: Louis Lortie in the popular Concerto for the Left Hand by Ravel, Martin Helmchen in the rarely performed and beautiful Concerto for Piano and Orchestra by Dvoƙák and, finally, the young Daniil Trifonov opens with festival with the famous Piano Concerto No. 3 by Rachmaninoff.

In the concern of promoting young artists, we will present the talents of the Verbier Festival Academy at the Chillon Castle and the festival will conclude in a novel way: I have the honor and pleasure to announce that the Septembre Musical welcomes, for the first time in Western Europe, as of September 4, 2012, the 7th International Tchaikovsky Competition for Young Musicians (a competition open to musicians up to 17 years). This is a rare opportunity to listen to the young violinists, cellists and pianists from around the world as they take their first steps into the professional world.

I look forward to welcoming you from August 30 to Sept.15 in Montreux or in Vevey for a musical journey between tradition and modernity.
